Question I
Using Conventions
- We showed an attractive female victim, which is one of the most popular and well-known conventions. We used this convention because it adheres to the stereotypes of men and women in horror. Our female victim also acts as a 'final girl', which is a theory made by Clove.
- We have quick paced shots at the end of our trailer which is a very common featured that many horror trailers have, such as You're Next. It allows to have flashes of parts of the film and also doesn't give away too much of the movie's plot.
- We used masked killers which adheres to convention because many killers in horror films hide their faces to make them more inhuman, such as Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th),
Developing Conventions
- Our trailer music can also be seen as a convention to more older horrors that used synth music, but we over-exaggerated the electronic music to make it new and interesting, and it make it stand out from many other horrors.
- We used a phone as a main prop in our trailer, which we got inspiration from Scream but we changed it to a more modern day scenario, where the killers could track her by hacking her phone.
Challenging Conventions
- We used electronic music in our trailer, which is different to many other horror trailers who use more classical music and instruments to create a creepy atmosphere. We used electronic music because it represents the modern day that our horror trailer is set in and the impact that the technology has in the movie.
- Instead of having just one masked killer, we had a group of 4, which is rare to see in horror films as there is normally just one main killer. We used 4 killers to make it more realistic as they can co-ordinate attacks on people and work together to get the victim.
- Unlike other horror films that use killers that are psychopaths or monsters, the killers in our horror are doing it for business, since it is their job to gather organs, and they get a lot of money for doing it. One of the reasons that makes our horror scary is it's realism. There are organisations all around the world that illegally collect human organs.
Our Poster
Our poster adheres to conventions of more older horror film posters, that have the female victim in the centre, and the killers in the background as silhouettes. We also used a moon to link in with the name of our horror, and the fact that many other horrors use the moon in posters, especially monster movies.
Our Magazine
Our magazine and poster are similar because we used the female protagonist as the center image against a dark background. In both images, she is seen as injured, but deliberately posing. This adheres to conventions since many horror magazines use their female lead in the way we have. We also tried to use colours that stood out against the black background of the magazine to make it more eye catching to the viewer.
Inspirations
We took inspiration for our trailer mainly from 'You're Next'. We loved the idea of a group of killers hunting down victims for business, so we changed it slightly to a group of killers hunting down a particular victim and added a modern twist to it with the use of technology, hacking and the deep web.
